Kids Fishing Trinity Bay

6-26-2010
After making an early morning drive for live croaker we finally made it. Fishing the Trinity Bay is hot right now. The morning started off with a bang right from the start.  The water and tide were perfect. This trip was going to be great.  We first stopped at a favorite spot.  Right off the bat we had 3 fish on one after the other. For the next 5 minutes or so all you heard was dad I got one. The morning continued to be successful as we worked our way towards the spillway. We ended the trip with 20 trout.  We had two nice 5 pounders and the rest averaged 3 pounds.

Back at the boat ramp cleaning fish the excitement continued.  There are a few alligators that regular the ramp. Two are well over 10 feet.  Talk about making a mother nervous.

This trip will be remembered always.  We had so much fun. There is nothing in this world I would rather be doing than spending time with my family in the outdoors.  Always take the time to introduce and share the outdoors.

Hot in Trinity

6-25-10

Trinity Bay is as good as it gets right now.  There are fish on the flats, fish on the shell, and fish at the wells.  Take your pick and get after it.  I had a party on Friday the 25th fishing the Sellers Brothers Tournament which benefits the wounded Veterans.  I ended up drawing the Pasadena Police team so I knew I would be in trouble if I didn’t put them on fish.  I did some scouting Thursday afternoon and found some fish on a reef that has produced in the past for me.  The winds were forecasted at 5-10mph and of course it was 10 plus first thing Friday morning.  The fish didn’t seem to care about the wind though as we produced 21 trout and 2 good reds at our first stop free lining live croakers over the reef in 6-7 foot of water.  It started off slow, but quickly picked up w/ several doubles in the mix.  The winds began to settle and the fish began to slow so we decided to make a run to a sand flat that had been holding some good trout.  After about 10 minutes of nothing I began to spot reds and trout busting schools of shad on top of the water.  I quickly pulled the anchor and trolled close enough to cast and it was on.  For the next hour it was a three ring circus on the boat.  When the dust cleared my 94 quart ice chest was full to the bream with fish flopping out of it.  We finished the day w/ 38 trout and 4 reds.  I knew we had a shot at winning the tournament w/ 3 good trout and 2 good reds.  Sure enough we weighed in our 5 fish for a total weight of 25.44lbs and a first place finish.  What a day.

Summer Time Surf Trout

5-28-10

Jeremy and I along w/ friends Mike and Sammy hit the High Island Surf Friday morning May 28th with high hopes of limits of trout.  We showed up to a flat surf just like we were hoping too, but the water wasn’t the best.  There were big schools of mullet and I quickly hooked up and lost a trout from the middle of a big bait pod.  That was it for the top water bite which I was hoping to last for a while.  Mike was right behind me hooking up on 2 nice trout throwing an electric chicken Texas Trout Killer.  The trout bite went dead shortly after Mike strung his fish, but Jeremy was able to hook up w/ some huge lady fish.  Not so good for the table, but they’re fun to catch none the less.  We decided to move spots after this and after a slow bite the fish finally turned on.  Jeremy and Sammy found a honey hole and caught fish on nearly every cast for close to an hour.  Although most of the fish were undersize they were at least catching and keeping some as well.  Mike and myself found our own bite and each began to hook up w/ some decent trout.  It was tough fishing w/ the trout being out deep you had to stand in neck deep water to reach the trout, but at least we were catching fish.  The tides began to rip out and the bite we had enjoyed slowly died.  We didn’t set the world on fire, but we ended the day w/ 17 trout in the box.

Trinity at the Wells

 7-2-10
Jeremy and Jason took a trip to the wells with just the boys.  Despite the ruff water conditions, Blaine and Seth had a great day fishing.  The boys caught 8 nice trout, 2 large reds and a sheeps head. The redfish and the sheeps head really gave the boys a fight.

After spending the day w/ the family on Saturday I couldn’t stand it and just had to get my son Seth into the action on Sunday.  We started off on the same sand flat all the action occurred on Friday, but it just wasn’t happening today.  We picked up 4 trout with Seth putting 3 of the 4 in the box.  Not sure where the 6 year old learned to talk trash, but it started early.  HAHA.  The winds began to let up a little so I decided to go check out the reef where we had done very well on Friday.  It wasn’t really happening here either, we picked up 3 fish and it was starting to get hot outside.  I told Seth “lets go check one well where I caught some fish the other day and we’ll head in”.  It was a good thing we did because the tides were coming in and the trout were hungry.  Our first two casts produced 2 solid trout.  We sat there for the next hour catching fish and having a ball.  Seth hooked into a big fish and I wasn’t sure what he had until it came up shaking it’s head on top of the water “huge trout” I yelled and that’s when the nerves set in.  Seth fought the fish like a champ and with a little help from dad to get him out from underneath the boat we landed his personal best fish.  A 26” 6 pound trout.  I think I was more excited than he was.  I asked him if he wanted to keep it or release it and of course he wanted to keep it, but then he said “if you want to let it go dad that’s ok”.  I couldn’t do that to him so we decided to keep it and mount it for his room.  Not long after that I caught and release and another 26” trout as well as a 25” trout.  What a day w/ my son.  We ended up keeping 15 trout for table and a life time of memories.
